Budget Savvy Storage PDF Print Email

Today's Living the Budget Savvy Life entry is provided by Budget Savvy Food Columnist, Mark Parker.

It is a rainy Sunday, and I am thinking about addressing the storage nightmare in my bedroom closet: with a trip to Ikea. Almost all of my storage solutions start with Ikea. There are many product styles and most of their products allow you the freedom and flexibility to adapt them to your own needs.

As with all my unchaperoned trips to Ikea, I ask myself two questions:
  1. Do I really need it?
  2. Would Melissa roll her eyes knowing I was going to Ikea without a chaperon?
The second question always makes me think a little harder about jumping into the car impulsively. Today, I decided to take a really good look at the seriousness of the problem so I will feel confident when settling on a storage solution.

Over time the tops of my bedroom book cases have become home to my long sleeved winter shirts. I have so many t-shirts packed into my dresser that I could barely open it. As turned to stare at my packed closet, I noticed several shirts that I have not worn recently. Next to it was another shirt that no longer fit well after a few washings. Further down the row was another that had an uncomfortable texture. I pulled them all out and set them on my bed.

I am not sure if the cat left the room because of the commotion, or because I had started talking to myself.

What was the last time I fit into those pants? And those slacks were never very comfortable. And what was I thinking when I bought plaid hiking shorts? The ball was rolling and it grew with the addition of a pile of mismatched pillow cases and some old sports coats that I will never wear again.

Twenty minutes had passed and I had filled up large bags of gently used clothing for my local charity. Two large, blue Ikea bags, to be specific. My closet was half empty and I now had room to hang up all the shirts cluttering the top of my book cases and filling the dresser drawers.

There is a best part. What is the best part, you ask? I need to go to Ikea now, because I am out of those handy big blue bags. Stop rolling your eyes at me Melissa!
